Microsoft SQL Server 2000 / Windows Server 2000 End of Life Support

Microsoft Corporation™ recently announced that they plan to retire older versions of Windows Server and SQL Server next year. Because of this decision, Kryptiq Corporation will end support for Microsoft SQL 2000 and Microsoft Windows Server 2000 as of July 1, 2008. While this affects major and minor releases, patch releases for existing versions of Kryptiq products will continue to receive support.

In order to address your concerns as quickly and efficiently as possible, we have included answers to the most common questions.

Why are you doing this?

Microsoft has an End of Life (EOL) policy that Kryptiq follows. In particular, Microsoft has made the following announcements:

Microsoft will not release any patches to fix existing problems for these platforms, unless they deem the issue a critical security threat. As Microsoft ends support for specific product versions, Kryptiq will end support for these versions as well.

Early in 2008, Microsoft plans to release SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008. Kryptiq is excited about the new functionality these products offer. By ending compatibility with the older versions, we can focus on the advancements only available in Windows 2003/2008 and SQL 2005/2008.

Where does Microsoft list their lifecycle information?

What constitutes a patch release?

Kryptiq denotes a patch release by the version number. In the case of version 1.2.3, the number “1” represents a major release, the number “2” indicates a minor update of the major release, and the number “3” indicates a patch release.

For example, if we release version 4.3.0 before July 2008, we will support 4.3.0 with Windows Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000. After July 2008, we will support patch releases (e.g. 4.3.1, 4.3.2) for use with SQL Server 2000 and Windows Server 2000. When versions 4.4 or 5.0—indicating a minor or major update—are released after July 2008, neither would be compatible with Windows Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000.

How long will Kryptiq support the versions released prior to July, 2008?

This depends on the Kryptiq release schedule. Kryptiq provides support for the last two minor releases of our products. Presently, version 4.2.3 is our latest release of Secure Messaging and the Patient Portal. This means we support the current release, 4.2.3, and the last minor release, which was 4.1.1.

For older versions, we happily provide "best effort" support. This level of support comes with the understanding that if a newer version addresses the issue, the prescribed resolution will be to upgrade to our latest version.

I plan to migrate to a new server with the latest Microsoft software. Will Kryptiq assist me with this?

A Kryptiq Customer Support Representative will gladly re-install our software on your new servers, and migrate your database and configuration settings.

This is considered a standard installation, so Professional Service fees apply. Please contact Kryptiq Customer Support to determine the number of hours needed to ensure the migration to new hardware is a smooth process.
